Diagnosis involves a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach that includes a history, physical examination, and neurodevelopmental assessment.

 

A team of professionals is often involved in providing the necessary assessments to make the final diagnosis and includes:

  • Physician
  • Psychologist or Neuropsychologist
  • Speech and Language Pathologist
  • Occupational Therapist
  • Social Worker

 

The following brain functions or domains are evaluated by a diagnostic team during a FASD assessment:

  • Motor skills
  • Neuroanatomy/neurophysiology (brain structure)
  • Cognition
  • Language
  • Academic achievement
  • Memory
  • Attention
  • Executive function, including impulse control and hyperactivity
  • Affect Regulation
  • Adaptive behaviour, social skills or social communication
